Conflict Minerals Reporting Requirements

(TEMPE, Arizona) October 19, 2011 — The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 requires publically traded manufacturing companies to submit a new annual report on the source of "conflict minerals" that are necessary for product functionality and/or production. Conflict minerals are identified by the United States Secretary of State as minerals whose origins can be traced to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or other countries in proximity to the DRC and sold to finance regional conflicts. CAPS Research recently conducted a SnapShots benchmarking survey asking supply management organizations how they are addressing this recent legislation.

Although very few survey participants reported their organizations have policies and/or procedures in place to address their ability to trace minerals that fall within the conflict minerals classification, the large majority plan on doing so within the next year. The report also notes that 60 percent of the participants reported their current minerals sourcing strategies will have to be changed to ensure their products or manufacturing processes can be certified to be conflict-free.
