Benchmarking: Pharmaceutical Industry Benchmarking Metric Report 2008
Almost half of the companies who participated in the recently released 2008 pharmaceutical
industry benchmarking survey reported they outsource some of their supply management
functions. While this metric is fairly consistent with data provided for the 2006
industry benchmarking report, the total number of activities and functions being
outsourced continue to increase. Supply management teams keep actively engaged by
leading outsourcing initiatives, providing sourcing expertise, and managing the
relationships with service providers. The 2008 Pharmaceutical Industry Benchmarking
Metric Report contains key supply management performance measures including organizational
structure, professional development, financial information and supplier relationships
and alliances.

Benchmarking report: Cross-Industry Report of Standard Benchmarks
CAPS Research recently published the May 2008 Cross-Industry Benchmarking Report.
The 20 standard benchmarks were calculated from data provided by 198 companies representing
14 industry sectors. One of the more popular benchmarks is "Procurement operating
expense per procurement employee", for which the average of all industry averages
(as reported) is $112,470. When comparing the 2008 and 2007 cross-industry reports,
the average procurement operating expenses increased on average 5.7% for six of
14 industry sectors, and decreased 8.8% for five of the 14 industry sectors. There
were essentially no changes between the 2008 and 2007 procurement operating expenses
for the remaining three industry sectors.
